Maci woke up with blood in her ear Wednesday morning so before going to Iowa City, we stopped at urgent care. Tubes looked good and no infection. We are assuming she scratched herself. Especially since the doctor thought she had allergies which makes a lot of sense given her never ending runny nose.
After that quick trip we were off to the pediatric rhuemotolgist. As we suspected, the arthritis has traveled to her left ankle. The doctor also thought the cyst on her right wrist was larger and her range of motion less. She gave us the option to do an injection or start systemic treatment. Despite getting the laundry list of side effects and issues using methotrexate, we decided to go that route. Instead of chasing the arthritis around her body, we think it is best to treat her entirely. Starting Friday night we will give Maci a weekly dose which should help keep her arthritis in control. We are hoping she will take it orally (sounds like it has an extremely bad taste) so that we do not have to give her the injections ourselves. We should know more Saturday but there is a decent chance it could make her sick (pukey sick).
Maci was awesome yesterday and NEVER once complained as she was poked and prodded. Actually, she was smiling and chatty most of the time. I'm far from excited about this treatment method. Making the decision to put your toddler on what is really a chemotherapy drug was not an easy one but a necessary one. If it allows our happy, loving little two year old to be her mouthy and mobile self, it will be worth it.
